Mecobalamin, the active form of vitamin B12 in Mecopen, plays a vital role in the functioning and maintenance of nerve cells. It is essential for myelin synthesis, neuronal function, proper red blood cell formation, and DNA synthesis. Mecobalamin aids in the regeneration of axonal nerves promotes axonal transport and exhibits neuroprotective properties.

✔️ Dosage & Administration:
Tablet:
- 0.5 mg taken three times daily after meals.
- Dosage may be adjusted based on the patient's age and severity of symptoms.
✔️ Interaction:
Certain drugs, including neomycin, aminosalicylic acid, histamine H2-antagonists, omeprazole, and colchicine can reduce the absorption of vitamin B12. Oral contraceptives may lower serum concentrations. These interactions should be considered when measuring blood levels.
✔️ Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to Mecobalamin or any component of the formulation.
✔️ Side Effects:
- Dermatologic: Rash (discontinue use if this occurs).
- Gastrointestinal: Anorexia, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
- Neurologic: Headache.
- Others:
- Anaphylactoid reactions (e.g., decreased blood pressure or dyspnea) may occur. Treatment should be discontinued if these symptoms appear.
- Hot sensation, diaphoresis, and pain/induration at the injection site.
✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation:
- No data is available on the use of Mecobalamin during pregnancy and lactation. Vitamin B12 is excreted in breast milk, but it is generally considered compatible with breastfeeding by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
✔️ Precautions & Warnings:
Mecopen should not be used for more than one month unless it proves effective. Due to potential risks, long-term use of high doses is not recommended for patients who handle mercury or mercury compounds.
